Grand Challenges: Nanotechnology - Consultation on Third Call

Fri 8th Aug 2008

Consultation

We have not yet set the focus for this Grand Challenge, and are seeking input from the research and user community about what areas we should focus on.  We would like to receive input from a wide range of researchers and users.  The information we receive through this consultation will be used to inform the scoping of the call.

As Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary subject, we welcome input from individuals and organisations outside our normal community about how engineering and physical science research can contribute to broader issues.  Depending on the suggestions we receive through this consultation we may return to the research and user community for additional advice.

EPSRC has up to £5 million available to allocate and we will be seeking contributions from other funders as appropriate as the scope of this call is developed.

How to send your comments

A form and further information can be found at:

http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/ResearchFunding/Programmes/Nano/RC/GrandChallengesNanotechnology.htm

Please note that EPSRC are not asking for proposals for research at this stage. They are looking for suggestions of topics that this call should focus on and their merits.

Background

This will be the third nanotechnology Grand Challenge.  In 2007, we awarded £6.7 million for first stage projects in the Grand Challenge call on Nanotechnology for Energy, and in 2008 we issued the call on Nanotechnology for Healthcare, with £15 million available for the first stage. The programme has involvement from all other research councils and the Technology Strategy Board.
