Consumers Hold the Key to Reducing Carbon Footprint
Fri 28th Mar 2008
Mounting pressure for more efficient, environmentally friendly devices that could help reduce the domestic carbon footprint is having a growing influence on the uptake of new technologies, says a new report from the Integrated Products Manufacturing Knowledge Transfer Network.
Homes are on a par with industry for carbon emissions, due in part to the continuing rise of inefficient traditional appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and air conditioners, and the emergence of new products such as computers, DVD players, set-top boxes and broadband equipment. Added to this, many homes have several TVs and some have more than one fridge. Changing population dynamics have played their part too, with a rise in single-parent households and larger homes. As a result, carbon emissions from homes in the UK make up nearly a third of the national total.
The KTN’s Technology Watch Analyst Dr Chris Stokes says, ‘Energy efficiency is going to increase in importance as a factor in the design of integrated products. The business community, which is the primary target audience for our Technology Watch reports, needs to understand this trend. But this report may also interest homeowners looking for a better understanding of current legislative and technical developments aimed at reducing the domestic carbon footprint.’
The demand for environmentally friendly products has been on the rise for a number of years, but has accelerated over the last few years. According to a recent Eurobarometer survey, European citizens are increasingly concerned about the environment, with environment protection ranking second only to terrorism among the issues citizens feel are best addressed at EU level.
