IeMRC Power Electronics Cluster

Thu 16th Jul 2009
Background and Purpose of Workshop

Power electronics is an essential technology in all future sustainable energy scenarios since it is the only technology that can deliver efficient and flexible control of electrical energy. As a result the share of electrical energy which will be controlled by power electronics is expected to increase from 40% in 2000 to 80% in 2015. Latest market analysis “Power
Electronics: Technologies and Global Markets”1 shows that the global market for power electronics devices in 2007 was $9.8bn and this is expected to reach $17.7bn by 2013 with a compound annual growth rate of 11.6%.

The UK is an excellent position to benefit from this growth where future innovations will stimulate sectors including aerospace; transport; energy generation, transmission & distribution; industrial control; telecommunications; healthcare. UK based technology and manufacturing capability in power electronics is currently relatively strong with globally
competitive industries across the whole supply chain supported by a world-leading research base. Many systems are application specific, highly customised, tend to have a relatively high added value and are thus suited to a technologically advanced manufacturing base.
